Benefits of kefir

Kefir is a yogurtlike beverage, rich in probiotics and beneficial bacteria.  Being fermented it helps immensly with the breakdown of foods and overall gut health.
***This last pregnancy I would wake up in the middle of the night from gas pains.  It was awful!  My midwife recommended eating more fermented foods.  This kefir saved my nights…I could now sleep! 🙌🏽

Do you know what goes into the storebought beverages you‘re drinking? All too often, these storebought drinks contain unhealthy additives and artificial ingredients.

But even more importantly they are not made the original way.  With grains!  There is an entire fascinating history of kefir HERE that would take too long for me to summarize, but the point I want to emphasize is that ALL real kefir grains derive from the original ones from some 4000 years ago.
This way the kefir is pure, contains all the vital nutrients available and doesn’t contain all that unecessary sugar, dyes etc nor is it cooked (which kills a lot of the good bacteria)

Healthy Homemade Kefir Recipe

Ingredients

  • Kefir grains-Sometimes local natural grocers will have them (though they would have had to be tampered with in order to ship), or sellers on Etsy I find have good reviews (here & here). The best place is to aquire them from someone.
  • Lactose milk (Cow, goat, any percent) Even better if you have access to raw milk from a local farm.

Instructions

  • Put 1 Tbl of grains into a mason jar or other glass container with lid
  • Fill jar with (lactose) milk (can be 1%-whole) place lid on top (not sealed)
    *I find it works best with whole that we get from the farms in our area.
  • Place in dry area out of direct sunlight for 2448 hours
  • Strain kefir through sifter/sieve
  • Repeat the process to make more, OR store grains in fridge in sealed container with enough milk to cover (2:1 ratio)

I hope you give kefir a try.  I believe it has the ability to improve overall health.  I truly wish there were a way for me to tell you how to get grains in whatever area you’re each in…But if you don’t know anyone in your area, sellers on Etsy I would say are the next best thing.  I haven’t purchased from these myself, but they looked promising, and I would probably go with them if I didn’t already have my own grains.
