Why Coffee Alternative?

☕️ There is something very cozy-esk about coffee + a book ESPECIALLY in the Fall.  So why not just go for the original thing? Well for me, I’ve never been a coffee drinker…I see NO health benefits in drinking coffee. 🤷🏼‍♀️
☕️ I don’t like the idea of anything that raises my heart rate, yellows my teeth and has the potential of withdrawl discomforts should I want to stop (sugar can have that effect on me too…so i avoid that as well).
Not to mention it gets pricy 💰

HEALTHY Coffee Alternatives with nutrients!!!

It’s actually mind blowing how many coffee alternatives and substitutes are out there.  But maybe you’re asking “Joi how can you possibly no much about this…how much is there even to know?”
So I’ve personally sampled over 5, and am constantly discovering more.

It all started while on a service mission in Portugal, I became aquainted with Cevada…a yummy barley and sugar beet beverage that looked, smelled-and I was told-tasted like coffee.
It was October and the weather had just turned cold.  I LOVED waking up at 6 am, hearing the gulls and pigeons outside our apartment, feeling the ocean breeze and sip my cevada…all the while knowing it was actually NOURISHING me 🙌🏽

Before that, I always accepted that I would forever be content with the comforting smell of coffee alone.  But NOW a door had been opened.  When I first got back to the States I couldn’t find anything like cevada ANYWHERE! My heart was broken—no seriously, a piece of me died lol.

Coffee Alternative Types and Brands

coffee alternatives

☕️ Cafe CapomoMade from the Maya nut.  This alternative is probably the most comparable to coffee.  In the way it’s prepared to the taste.  The Maya Nut is ground to a consistency that needs to be brewed in a coffee maker, or strained.  I use a coffee filter and colander.
Maya nuts contain natural energizing and nourishing ingredients.  And is also safe to consume during pregnancy.  Read more about them HERE.

☕️ PeroThis next coffee alternative consists of a few ingredients, primarily barley and chicory.  I personally prefer the flavor of this best (paired with Italian Sweet Creamer).  It also blends nicely.  It comes in a powder form like hot cocoa or Nesquick, and you just add hot water, and is the easiest to find-carried by most grocery stores, (near the teas).  I like this one hot or iced in the summer time.  However, it’s not recommended to consume chicory while pregnant.  So my Capomo has temporarily taken its place.

☕️ CafixUsually found at Sprouts, or other health food stores.  Ingredients: hickory, chicory, roasted barley and sugar beats.  For me this one is probably my least favorite flavor wise, however, my friend who’s formerly a coffee drinker loves it, because it’s extra bitter…🤷🏼‍♀️ So I guess it depends on your taste.

CONCLUSION

Ultimately, we’re all different, and our bodies respond to different substances in different ways….I say do what is best HEALTH wise for YOU-but also be HONEST with yourself, if you find you “CAN’T FUNCTION” without something…probably a good sign that it’s not the best thing for your body.
It was a HAAAARD fact to face the day I admitted that sugar had a literal physical and emotional (negative) effect on me.  But it’s been a better life since I was honest with myself about it!
